School District Pays $95K to Settle Lawsuit After Painting Over Bible Verse Tribute to Charlie Kirk
A North Carolina school district agreed Monday to pay $95,000 to settle a student’s lawsuit after her school painted over her tribute to Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk shortly after his assassination.
A high school junior at the Ardrey Kell High School secured permission to paint “Freedom 1776” and “Live Like Kirk—John 11:25” on the school’s “spirit rock,” a large boulder that often features messages on political topics. Yet within hours, she learned from social media that officials had ordered the “Live Like Kirk” portion painted over.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education agreed to adopt a new student speech policy, issue a public statement exonerating the student, and pay $95,000 in damages and attorneys’ fees, Alliance Defending Freedom, which represented the student, announced Monday.
“What happened to this student is outrageous,” Travis Barham, a senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, said in a statement on the settlement. “School officials should never censor, punish, or shame a student simply for sharing her views.”
“Charlie Kirk boldly defended open and respectful discourse on school grounds literally until his last breath, and this courage inspired many across the country, including our client, whom Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials treated so abominably,” Barham added. “It is long past time for school officials to learn that they cannot promote student viewpoints they like while punishing students whose views they dislike.”
School Accusations
After the school painted over the student’s tribute to the Turning Point USA founder, officials sent out an email accusing her of “vandalism” and saying that law enforcement was conducting an investigation. The day after that, officials called her out of class to write an official statement describing her actions, and forced her to show them her phone logs.
The officials later unveiled a now-superseded speech code that only allowed “positive school spirit” and messages that “uphold the inclusive values of our school community.” The code explicitly banned students from expressing religious messages on the rock.
When the officials formally concluded that the student, her parents, and her friends had not committed vandalism, they quietly closed the investigation with no apology and claimed they never accused or investigated her.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education issued a statement after the adoption of the policy, WNCN News Raleigh reported on Tuesday:
“The Board has settled the case of G.S., a minor v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education. The Board has adopted a new Student Free Speech policy that addresses ‘spirit rocks’ and other expressive activities. Although previously communicated to the community on October 11, 2025, the Board reaffirms and clarifies the following: The students’ painting of the Ardrey Kell spirit rock on September 14, 2025, did not violate the Code of Student Conduct or other school system policies in place at the time. It was not an act of vandalism, and the school did not report the incident to law enforcement. The Board regrets that the student had this experience.”
Charlie Kirk’s Assassination
Kirk died on Sept. 10, 2025, after suffering a bullet to the neck. Prosecutors say that Tyler Robinson, the man accused of murdering him, said he intended to snuff out Kirk’s “hate.”
Conservatives across the country paid tributes to Kirk, but some on the Left celebrated or dismissed his death. President Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into leftist-motivated violence in the wake of the assassination, and companies have distanced themselves from nonprofits that criticized Turning Point USA.
In John 11:25, Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” Christians point to such passages to emphasize Jesus’ gift of eternal life to those who believe in him.

15 Militants Indicted For Forcefully Obstructing ICE In Minnesota In Antifa Cell Bust
The indictment seems to confirm many of the tactics observed by The Federalist in Minneapolis earlier this year. California Is Stuck in a Doom Loop
Editor’s note: This is a lightly edited transcript of today’s video from Daily Signal Senior Contributor Victor Davis Hanson. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more of his videos.
Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for the Daily Signal.
We’ve talked a lot about the crisis that California is in and what it may predict for the rest of the United States should they follow the California blue model. Many of them are.
I guess we could sum it up as a doom loop. A doom loop.
California is in a cycle where there’s no chance, unless it makes radical change, that it can get out of it as it heads toward what we might call Third World extinction.
Now, we need to break it down from the symptoms to the cause. The Greeks had a word, and the historian Thucydides said there was a prophasis, a superficial explanation, an apparent explanation, or sometimes a disingenuous explanation. And then there was the aitia, the real problem.
People don’t really want to talk about the real problem.
But here are the symptoms as we know them, the prophasis.
We have the highest taxes in the United States: a 13.3% income tax, the highest gas taxes, and among the top 10 highest sales taxes. We have the highest gasoline prices. We have the highest electricity prices in the continental United States.
We have some of the worst services. Reason magazine said our roads are 49th in the nation. We know that our schools are in the bottom 10% based on test scores.
Half of all births are conducted through Medi-Cal, our state welfare system. Forty percent are on it. Twenty-five percent don’t or can’t pay their power bills every month.
We’ve got the largest fraud in the country. Over many years, it may have extended up until now to $250 billion.
Okay, so those are the symptoms, and we know the manifestation of those symptoms.
We have supermajorities in the state legislature, supermajorities in the Senate and the Assembly, and only seven of 52 congressional seats are held by Republicans. Donald Trump won 38%. Most Republican presidents win 40%. That’s 13% of our congresspeople.
And remember, that’s considered too generous by the Left. Given their new redistricting plan, we may go down to five Republicans.
And because we’ve had no statewide offices, I mean governor, we haven’t appointed anybody but a liberal judge. No conservatives, no Republican judges on the state superior court, appellate court, or supreme court in 15 years.
In the federal system, the Ninth Circuit is already known to be quite liberal. So if you go to court in California, you’re going to be facing a liberal judge. That’s the truth.
But here’s the real problem. Those are symptoms.
The real problem is that 300,000 to 500,000 Californians are leaving the state. They can’t put up with what I just discussed. They’re sick of it.
They’re sick of it for a very strange reason that’s not so apparent. Yes, they’re sick of paying all that money in taxes and power bills and then getting terrible services, terrible roads, not very good health care, and terrible schools. But they’re being insulted.
They’re being told, “Go. Go. We don’t want you.”
That’s the message from California.
Elon Musk is worth a trillion dollars. Can you imagine had he stayed? He wanted to stay in California. And we’re losing a lot of the Google people, and Mark Zuckerberg is leaving.
They’re leaving because not only do they pay a lot and get very little, but they’re being insulted by this government. It’s truly a socialist government, government in the widest sense of the word—state, local, offices.
People do not like wealthy, successful people. They feel they cheated, or, as Elizabeth Warren said, “You didn’t build that.”
So they’re leaving.
Those are the people who pay 58% of their income in federal, state, and local taxes. Those are the people who pay a large segment of their income at over 10% and even over 13.3%.
Now they’re being replaced.
Over 50 years, 12 million of them have left. These were the [Ronald] Reagan voters, the Pete Wilson voters, the George Deukmejian voters, the Arnold Schwarzenegger voters.
But they’re being replaced.
Twenty-seven percent of the California resident population was foreign-born, largely from the Western Hemisphere south of the border, Asia, and Africa. Most of them, not all, come here very, very poor and in need, because we’re a kind and humane society, of massive subsidies: health, education, legal, housing, and food.
That is one reason why we chronically run budget deficits.
We’re spending enormous amounts of money on redistributive programs, sometimes fraud, but welfare entitlements: Medi-Cal, food stamps, what we used to call food stamps, Section 8 housing, all of that.
And the people who paid for that are leaving.
There’s one other wrinkle, the real cause of this problem.
Silicon Valley inherited at the millennium a global audience of 7 billion consumers for Apple, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and all of it. Fourteen trillion dollars became confined to the area between San Jose and Berkeley, and that has created a political class.
As that money trickles through the economy to lawyers, Hollywood, elected officials, unions, and all the avenues of left-wing political expression, it’s made a coastal elite not subject to the consequences of their ideology.
They don’t really care about the price of electricity. They don’t really care about the price of gas. They don’t care that we have almost half the nation’s homelessness.
They have so much money and such a secure ZIP code that we, the lab rats, experience the consequences of their experiment upon us.
Let me just sum up.
We have seen the largest diaspora of population shifts in California history, much bigger than the Oklahoma diaspora to California.
People are leaving with money who paid the bills, and the people who are coming are the recipients of programs funded by their money.
And we have an elite who knows this but feels protected, sort of protected sort of like Tom Steyer, who ran for governor, a billionaire who started out funding or investing in Indonesian coal and offshoring his money to avoid taxes and then renouncing billionaires.
That’s sort of how it works. The wealthy trash the wealthy, and then they take advantage of all the tax advantages that the wealthy alone have the ability to exploit.
Add it all up, and we’re in a doom loop.
Yes, everything is bad in California. The elections are bad. We don’t have a Republican Party. There are no conservatives with political power.
But the reason is there’s this great population shift, and it’s not getting any better.
And if it continues, as I think it will, California will become sort of like the United Kingdom, a once prosperous, vibrant country in the 1970s, 1980s, and at the millennium, into something now that is poorer than Mississippi.
Don’t laugh. California can be poorer than Mississippi if the present government, the present demography, and the present migration patterns sustain themselves.
We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of the Daily Signal.

The Left Gears up for US 250th Anniversary by Dialing up the America Hating
Rolling into the 250th anniversary of the United States, liberals, leftists, Democrats, and democratic socialists are united behind one message: America stinks.
At the counterprogramming to the White House UFC match over the weekend, a bunch of miserable looking, aging celebrities held a “#resistance” rally or something like that.
Robert De Niro, an aging Hollywood gazillionaire last seen trying and failing to play a young tough guy in “The Irishman,” took to the stage and announced that “loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser.”
He further said that America is “not so lovable right now.”
Two Democratic politicians running against each other in a New York House district were asked on a local television show Monday who they wanted to “win it all” in the World Cup.
Now, if I as many an American were asked this soccer question, my response—without having any knowledge of soccer or what teams were even in the World Cup—would simply be to say, “the United States.” I’d rather answer that and be informed that the U.S. had been eliminated or wasn’t even in the tournament than to answer differently.
But the two Democrats, without the slightest hesitation, answered “Mexico” and “Senegal.”
These are politicians who assumedly make a living kissing babies and pretending to like things they don’t like to win elections. That they confidently said they support any other national team besides Team USA says as much about their constituents as it does them.
It runs right in line with what we saw last month on Memorial Day when Democratic leaders spent their time protesting at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, taking cheap partisan shots at the president, and grumbling about military spending on flyovers.
Their party leaders, “thought leaders,” and celebrity influencers see no point in making even token appeals to patriotism because their base of supporters simply don’t care. They even have a certain loathing for any display of patriotism.
While there is no question in my mind that there’s been an enduring and significant patriotism gap between the Left and Right in America, that reality is becoming an indelible mark of our politics and a difficult one to transcend in a country that has little else to bind it together besides civic nationalism.
A recent series of polls show a large and widening chasm between Americans who say they are proud and or “very proud” of America, and those who say they don’t.
The numbers are stark.
NBC News ran a headline on Sunday announcing a new poll showing that America at 250 “is riven with doubt and pessimism.” Some of the evidence is not surprising. There’s historically low trust in institutions, the federal government, and the media.
No big surprises there. The institutions earned their current deplorable level of trust.
But buried a little further in NBC’s report is another sign of the patriotism gap problem.
“While 62% of 2024 Trump voters say they are extremely proud to be Americans, 12% who picked Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024 said the same,” the report said.
That reality is backed up by other sources too.
Gallup released a poll a year ago that showed just how much the country has bifurcated on national pride in the last two decades.
In 2001, 87% of Americans said they felt “very proud” to be Americans.
By 2025 that number had dropped to 56%. But the drop was hardly uniform. The number for Republicans was 90% in 2001 and 92% in 2025 and hardly shifted at all, even in the years of Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden when Democrats were politically ascendent.
The chart of mostly sagging American pride is unmistakable for Democrats.
The numbers climbed to their highest point in the Obama years, plummeted after the first election of President Donald Trump, climbed back up again slightly after Biden entered office, then totally disintegrated after Trump’s return.
Now, none of this surprises me. It’s been clear for more than a decade that the Left’s love of America was only conditional on their own power, their diminishment of those they see as the “bitter clingers,” the “basket of deplorables” who are on the “wrong side of history.”
But it poses a significant dilemma for the nation going forward.
Elections now seem to have existential stakes. A small but growing number of people, particularly on the Left, would rather do violence to those who oppose them rather than convince others of the righteousness of their ideas.
Their righteousness is assumed to be self-evident, their enemies’ wickedness unquestionable.
Unfortunately, the answer to the challenge of our time is not immediate and seems unsatisfactory.
For now, we’ll muddle through for now as a nation divided. For those who love America, the foundation of ideas it was built on, the great people who formed it, the many generations who fought for it, and the culture that nourished it, we can only plant our flag and never let go.
We must do our best in our own time to reestablish and grow that love and devotion to country that was once nearly universal, teach the next generation right from wrong and how to be an informed patriot in a sea of broken institutions that would rather teach them to be uninformed America haters.
Let the angry Left rage at the memorials and statues going up in Washington, D.C. and elsewhere. Then build more. Let them show their true, miserable colors. Let them know that the flag is still there and not going anywhere. Be resolute and don’t give in to doomerism.
Reject decline. Embrace America.
