The Unholy Alliance You Weren’t Supposed to Notice

The Daily Signal - Sun, 08/23/2026 - 08:00

Something unusual happened on Oct. 8, 2023.

The morning after Hamas slaughtered 1,200 people in southern Israel, after women were raped, children were burned, and families were dragged into tunnels, demonstrators took to the streets and college campuses across the U.S., not in mourning, but in celebration.

Progressive activists marched alongside Islamist organizers. Transgender flags flew next to keffiyehs. Students at elite universities declared a sadistic massacre to be the opening act of a revolution.

It was, as one observer noted, Bolshevik demagoguery at its finest. The raped and murdered were recast as oppressors. The rapists and murderers became the oppressed.

What You Were Witnessing Has a Name

Scholars and analysts call it “the red-green alliance”: a working coalition between the radical secular left and Islamist political movements. It is not a formal organization. It has no single headquarters. But it is real, it is growing, and its ambitions are not modest.

To understand it, you have to understand what holds it together: because on the surface, it makes no sense at all.

The radical Left champions women’s autonomy, sexual liberation, and secular governance. Islamist political theology holds to the authority of Sharia, traditional gender roles, and the supremacy of religious law. These are not minor differences. They are irreconcilable visions of human life and social order.

And yet they march together. They fundraise together. They are reshaping Democratic primaries together.

What binds them is not a shared vision of the future. It is a shared enemy: the Judeo-Christian foundations of Western civilization, our natural law tradition, our ordered liberty and our understanding of the human person as made in the image of God and therefore possessed of an inherent dignity that no state can confer or revoke.

Both movements, in their activist forms, are united by what they oppose. And that opposition has proven sufficient to make them allies.

This Is Not a New Observation

Muslim reformers and scholars have been raising alarms about this alliance for years, often at great personal cost.

Dalia Ziada, an Egyptian Muslim scholar and activist who fled her country after publicly criticizing Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks, has called this partnership a “sinful marriage.” She argues that both movements share a hatred of Western liberal democracy, but with incompatible end goals: Marxists want a Marxist system; Islamists want an Islamist one. The alliance is tactical, not philosophical. It is a coalition of grievance rather than a community of belief.

Asra Nomani, a Muslim reformer, journalist, and author of “Woke Army: The Red-Green Alliance That Is Destroying America’s Freedom,” has documented extensively how this partnership operates through campus activism, political organizing, and social-justice rhetoric that obscures what is actually being advanced.

Zineb Riboua, a research fellow at Hudson Institute’s Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East, puts it plainly: in the hierarchy of progressive identity politics, Muslims have now been elevated to the position once reserved for other minority groups. This did not happen by accident. It reflects, she argues, decades of deliberate ideological preparation.

These are not voices from the political right. They are Muslim women who understand the tradition from the inside–and who see clearly what is being done in its name.

The Logic of the Alliance, Once You See It, Is Not Complicated

Both movements are expert at weaponizing the freedoms of liberal societies against those societies themselves. The radical Left has spent decades using Western institutions—courts, universities, media, corporate HR departments–to advance an agenda of a cultural revolution that does not seek to win arguments.

Islamism, in its political form, pursues a parallel strategy. Analysts describe it as “jihad by democracy”: using Western legal systems, financial influence, and political organizing to infiltrate institutions, elevate sympathetic figures, and gradually reshape the landscape of what is permissible to say, fund, or believe.

Both strategies share a common logic: exploit the openness of the system to close it.

This Alliance Is No Longer Theoretical

Zohran Mamdani’s recent electoral success is its most significant political achievement to date. He has denied Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state and proposes to govern by redistributionist means with the full support of the coalition’s activist infrastructure. The cooperation that produced this outcome is now being replicated in Democratic primaries across the country.

Just take a look at Michigan, with Socialist Abdul El-Sayed winning the Democratic U.S. Senate primary thanks in part to the massive vote of Muslims.

We should be clear-eyed about what this means. This is a revolutionary coalition whose constituent elements, for all their internal contradictions, agree on one thing: the civilization that produced constitutional self-government, freedom of conscience, and the inherent dignity of the human person must be dismantled.

The paradoxes are shocking, but also deliberate. LGBTQ+ activists rallying for a movement whose governing ideology would strip them of every freedom they have ever claimed is the logic of revolutionary alliance: you use whoever is useful until the revolution is won.

Catholics, of All People, Should Not Be Surprised by This

The church has never promised that history moves only forward. It has always been known that civilizations can be lost. Pope Benedict XVI warned the West about building public life “as if God does not exist.”  When reason is severed from faith, and when faith is expelled from the public square, what remains is not neutral secularism. It is a vacuum. And vacuums are filled.

The cut flowers of Western culture can look beautiful for a long time after they have been severed from their roots. But they do not last.

Catholics Should Not Respond With Fear or With Silence

Fear is what this moment is designed to produce. Silence is what the coalition requires to advance.

Our answer is discernment—the capacity to see what is actually happening—and courage: the willingness to say true things in public, to support candidates and institutions that take the civilizational stakes seriously, and to refuse the moral blackmail that labels clarity as bigotry and principle as hatred.

And our answer is also prayer: prayer for conversion and renewal by rebuilding of a culture that remembers what it owes to the tradition that formed it. That work begins in families. In parishes. In the daily choices of ordinary Catholics who refuse to let their children grow up as cut flowers.

The civilization being contested is not ours to own. It is ours to pass on.

EXCLUSIVE: Records Reveal Planned Parenthood’s 14-Point Post-Dobbs Strategy for State AGs to Target Pro-Lifers

The Daily Signal - Sun, 08/23/2026 - 08:00

A month after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Planned Parenthood issued marching orders for state attorneys general to target crisis pregnancy centers and issue abortion-friendly legal opinions.

State actions after the July 12, 2022, memo suggest Democrat attorneys general followed much of the 14-point plan pushed by the nation’s largest abortion provider.

On July 25, 2022, Brittany Jenkins, policy director of the Progressive State Leaders Committee, forwarded a Planned Parenthood memo to attorneys general and their staff, according to documents obtained by the Daily Signal. Jenkins informed them that Rachel Sussman, vice president of state policy for Planned Parenthood, was set to brief them the next day “to continue our discussion of continued actions AGs can take in response to the Dobbs decision.”

The memo claimed that pro-life crisis pregnancy centers, which provide care, food, clothing, and shelter to expecting mothers while trying to steer them away from abortion, are promoting “misinformation.”

“Provide information to the public about CPCs and take steps to curb their misleading and deceptive practices. For example, CA issued a Consumer Alert,” the Planned Parenthood memo says, referring to California. It also called for attorneys general to ask the Federal Trade Commission to “target misinformation perpetuated by crisis pregnancy centers regarding medication abortion.”

Less than a month later, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison issued a “consumer alert” about crisis pregnancy centers because, he said, “pregnant people” should have accurate information.

In December 2022, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin also issued a consumer alert and went even further, later issuing a subpoena to First Choice, a crisis pregnancy center, that demanded the names, phone numbers, addresses, and places of employment of all individual contributors. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held in April of this year that donors have a First Amendment right to contribute anonymously.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, whom Planned Parenthood had already pointed to as an example, sued several crisis pregnancy centers in his state. In October 2023, Bonta led 15 other Democrat counterparts in an open letter opposing the crisis pregnancy centers.

“We have watched with increasing concern in recent years as anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) have proliferated in our states, outnumbering abortion clinics by a three-to-one ratio,” the open letter said.

This past April, the U.S. Justice Department released an 882-page report detailing how President Joe Biden’s administration coordinated with major abortion industry groups, including Planned Parenthood, to weaponize law enforcement against pro-lifers. Yet the abortion industry also worked with multiple state attorneys general, according to documents obtained by the Daily Signal through a public records request with the office of Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul.

Some attorneys general had already begun to act even before the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs. However, Planned Parenthood’s memo did provide specific actions that matched the subsequent policies of blue states.

Pro-choice groups had pushed Biden’s Justice Department to ramp up prosecutions under the FACE Act, short for the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, a 1994 law meant to safeguard access to abortion clinics, pregnancy centers, and houses of worship.

The Planned Parenthood memo called for the strategy to be applied at the state level: “States should utilize all state laws, including state FACE Acts, to protect health care facilities that provide abortion.”

Eight days after the memo, Platkin announced a partnership with the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New Jersey and issued guidance to state prosecutors for enforcing clinic access laws.

The memo further stated that attorneys general could issue opinions to clarify legal questions on abortion, such as “guidance explicitly asserting consent to abortion rights for minors.”

According to the Center for American Progress, state attorneys general in Arizona, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania issued guidance on the legality of abortion and the status of medication abortion.

Planned Parenthood also called for states to coordinate legal representation for women, abortionists, and auxiliaries such as abortion funds. Arizona, California, New Jersey, and New York established task forces for this purpose, according to the Center for American Progress.

Kaul’s office, which fulfilled its legal obligation to provide the records, did not respond to inquiries for this story.

A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood did not respond to phone and email inquiries for this story.

Neither a spokesperson for the Progressive State Leaders Committee nor the Democratic Attorneys General Association responded to inquiries for this story. The Progressive State Leaders Committee is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy group founded in 2005 that shares an address with the Democratic Attorneys General Association and does not have any paid staff listed on its tax filing, according to the Capital Research Center, which monitors nonprofits.

National Media Skip Extreme Pro-Abortion Law in Massachusetts

The Daily Signal - Sun, 08/23/2026 - 07:00

On Aug. 10, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey signed a bill allowing abortion at any point in pregnancy. Abortion advocates call it “closing the gaps” in “abortion rights protections.” Abortion foes call it “abortion until birth,” making it legal to dismember fully formed babies, limb from limb.

The “mainstream” media called it nothing. You couldn’t find that story on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, or NPR. What about print? The New York Times noted this bill when it passed the state House in July, and The Washington Post ran an AP dispatch when it passed the state Senate. But I found nothing on the bill signing.

The AP headline was painfully vague: “Massachusetts is close to giving doctors the final word on whether to perform late abortions.” AP reporter Geoff Mulvihill didn’t emphasize this was an “abortion until birth” bill.

This was AP’s muddled lede: “Massachusetts is on the way to giving doctors the final say on whether an abortion should be allowed late in pregnancy, a move expected to affect few cases but that supporters say is needed because hospitals are now turning away women they should be serving.”

Abortions are allowed, “based on the professional judgment of the physician.” In the sixth paragraph, AP acknowledged: “Opponents say that it would allow abortion until birth.” But they’re not just “saying” it. That’s factual.

Why would this triumphant bill signing vanish without national media attention, if it’s such a wonderful thing for women’s rights? It’s not like they can’t cover something from Massachusetts. These networks are all over the trial of Lindsey Clancy, accused of strangling her own children. On Aug. 19, ABC, CBS, and NBC all found the story of Karen Solomon, who is wanted for questioning in the death of her police officer husband in Worcester.

One reason this did not become a national story is that it represents the Democratic Party’s extreme position on abortion. Liberal journalists easily find and lament the “extreme” pro-life position, but never the other extreme. When the liberals stand strongly behind an extreme, they pretend it’s not extreme.

For years, the “independent fact-checkers” have thrown flags when Republicans say the Democrats favor abortion up until birth. They bizarrely claim it’s false because late-term abortions are “rare.” The Kaiser Family Foundation says less than 1% of abortions are “late term,” and then they quibble that “late term” is questionable verbiage. But if there are a million-plus abortions in America, the math would say 10,000 late abortions a year — a small percentage, but not exactly “rare.”

A fair-minded “fact-checker” would acknowledge that, officially, Republicans are in general opposed to all or most abortions, while the Democrats are in general in favor of the right to abortion for almost any reason at any time. But an establishment Democrat who favors abortion on demand can currently be painted as a “moderate” in the media’s partisan lingo.

The elitist media couldn’t find any controversy for Healey, who has claimed to be a Catholic and yet signed something the Church staunchly opposes. Some Catholics want her excommunicated. A few days before Healey signed this extreme bill, she was warmly embraced with national attention on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe” for signing a bill to “protect people from ICE.” Those people would be illegal immigrants who are “terrorized”—by the prospect of deportation.

The national media’s moral compass: Deportation is a terrible injustice, even if you are a criminal. Abortion is a precious right, whenever you pay for one. Abortion is somehow victimless. This is why half the country doesn’t trust “news” from pro-abortion media elites.

Cracker Barrel Helps Itself to Humble Pie After Catastrophic CEO

The Daily Signal - Sun, 08/23/2026 - 06:00

THE WASHINGTON STAND—A year ago this month, America was in a full-blown uproar over the radical makeover of a beloved restaurant chain known for its therapeutic chicken and dumplings.

Now, 12 months after Cracker Barrel’s disastrous rebrand, karma (and the unemployment office) has come calling for CEO Julie Masino. The longtime restaurant executive is out after her soulless reinvention of a nationwide classic. And Uncle Herschel’s fans couldn’t be happier.

Masino isn’t a household name. But then again, neither was Alissa Heinerscheid, the architect of the most spectacular brand collapse in recent history. While Cracker Barrel’s fallout wasn’t nearly the market crash that Bud Light’s was after the Dylan Mulvaney partnership, it was certainly less excusable after the beer company became a corporate cautionary tale for the ages.

Ironically, Masino was hired in July of 2023, just as public backlash against Anheuser-Busch was hitting a fever pitch. According to Cracker Barrel’s board, they wanted an “innovator” who would bring in new customers. No one imagined that her approach would be a woke overhaul that sterilized everything the country had come to love about the down-home front-porch chain.

Removing the image of Uncle Herschel from the logo was Masino’s first mistake, followed by the decision to strike “Old Country Store” from its signs. Claiming the company was “not as relevant as we once were,” she oversaw other changes to the dining room’s antique, folksy decor. On the whole, Masino seemed to be on a crusade to sterilize the chain of its charm—a mission that caused everyone, including the president of the United States, to erupt in protest.

An avalanche of criticism rained down across social media platforms, causing market experts to scratch their heads at the departure. It’s “Brand Destruction 101,” Robby Starbuck argued. “They’re trying to ditch their previous customers and vibe, right? They want to say, ‘No, we’re going to be fresh and modern.’”

But, he warned, “I don’t believe this was just about a logo change and a fresh new look. I think this was about rejecting what they see as sort of a redneck old image that they had, right? And it’s a slap in the face of their customers, because there’s nothing wrong with the image that Cracker Barrel already had,” Starbuck said. “That’s where you see a big separation between the executive class and the American people.”

President Donald Trump, whose son was incredibly blunt about his opinion in his “WTF?!” post, took to Truth Social to urge the company to return to its roots. “Cracker Barrel should go back to the old logo, admit a mistake based on customer response (the ultimate Poll) and manage the company better than ever before.” In the businessman’s mind, “They got a Billion Dollars worth of free publicity if they play their cards right,” he insisted. “Very tricky to do, but a great opportunity. Have a major News Conference today. Make Cracker Barrel a WINNER again,” Trump wrote.

Leadership would have had a powerful reason to listen, given the chain’s $100 million loss in market value—almost overnight. Even other restaurants were starting to pile on, shaming Cracker Barrel for alienating its customer base. Steak ‘n Shake’s official account blasted the goal “to just delete the personality altogether.”

“Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and now the CEO wants to just scrape it all away. At Steak ‘n Shake, we take pride in our history, our families, and American values. All are welcome. We will never market ourselves away from our past in a cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers.”

And the changes weren’t just superficial, Starbuck warned, pointing to Cracker Barrel’s sudden alignment with LGBT extremists at the Human Rights Campaign. Under Masino, the chain announced a return to Pride celebrations and activism. “Along with ensuring educational resources and inclusivity practices are upheld every day, Cracker Barrel will also be returning to Nashville Pride and the Out & Equal Workplace Advocates Conference. There are many ways we encourage bringing your authentic self to work!” the company announced.

In other words, Starbuck pointed out, they’re “virtue signaling to a group of people that frankly don’t go to Cracker Barrel and never have gone to Cracker Barrel, don’t want to go to Cracker Barrel.” It’s “very concerning.”

Fortunately, after a weeklong shellacking, leadership made a snap decision to abandon the project. “If the last few days have shown us anything, it’s how deeply people care about Cracker Barrel. We’re truly grateful for your heartfelt voices. … You’ve also shown us that we could’ve done a better job sharing who we are and who we’ll always be,” the company stressed. “We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. We said we would listen, and we have. Our new logo is going away and our ‘Old Timer’ will remain.”

Within hours, the company’s stock skyrocketed above the pre-controversy value. Now, months later, the board is making it clear with Masino’s ouster that peg games, rocking chairs, nostalgic candy, and American values are here to stay.

“Following a robust and thoughtful search process, we are pleased to welcome David [Deno] as Cracker Barrel’s next CEO,” Independent Chairman of the Cracker Barrel Board Carl Berquist told reporters late last month. “He brings decades of experience across the restaurant and retail industries, with a strong track record of leading businesses through growth and a demonstrated commitment to operational excellence, guest experience, and team member engagement. … We wish Julie all the best in her future endeavors.”

As Jerry Bowyer, CEO of Bowyer Research, shared, a lot of behind-the-scenes effort went into the victory that customers are enjoying. Last fall, his firm filed with the SEC urging shareholders to vote against Cracker Barrel’s directors. “We argued that Cracker Barrel’s board should be held accountable for severe stock underperformance, strategic mistakes, and a growing disconnect between the company and the customers who built the brand.”

Sure, he acknowledged, “The logo controversy made headlines, but we viewed it as a symptom rather than the underlying problem. Over several years, Cracker Barrel appeared to be drifting away from the customers who made the brand successful. The company pursued recognition from groups such as the Human Rights Campaign while making changes to branding, store design, and corporate messaging that many long-time customers viewed as out of step with the traditions and identity that made Cracker Barrel successful,” Bowyer noted. “Shareholders were left watching performance lag while customer goodwill eroded.”

Although Masino survived the vote at the time, her support eroded by a dramatic percent, “well below the levels often seen in uncontested director elections,” Bowyer observed. “Director Gilbert Dávila did even worse, reportedly receiving majority opposition from shareholders and ultimately losing his board seat. Director elections,” he pointed out, “are one of the few opportunities investors have to signal concern before larger consequences arrive. Last year, Bowyer Research argued that Cracker Barrel needed greater accountability and a renewed focus on customers, execution, brand stewardship, and shareholder value. We took that position when much of the commentary suggested management’s strategy deserved the benefit of the doubt.”

Now, months after Jerry and Americans across the country took that stand, “the board has changed, the CEO is leaving, and many of the concerns shareholders raised look considerably less controversial than they did a year ago.” The bottom line, he reiterates, is the bottom line. “When management loses touch with customers, performance suffers. When performance suffers long enough, accountability follows.”
