Swalwell to Resign From Congress, Maintains His Innocence
On the morning of Friday, April 10, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., was considered to be the leading Democrat in the California gubernatorial primary. Four days later, Swalwell is not only bowing out of the race—but out of Congress entirely.
“I am aware of efforts to bring an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling anyone in Congress without due process, within days of an allegation being made, is wrong,” Swalwell said in a statement posted on X. “But it’s also wrong for my constituents to have me distracted from my duties.”
“Therefore, I plan to resign my seat in Congress,” Swalwell’s statement read.
— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) April 13, 2026
“I am deeply sorry to my family, staff, and constituents for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegation made against me,” Swalwell added. “However, I must take responsibility and ownership for the mistakes I did make.”
Swalwell’s career was upended over the weekend when the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN published reports on Friday in which multiple unnamed women came forward accusing the California congressman of sexual assault.
Swalwell has repeatedly denied the allegations levied against him.
“These allegations are flat false,” Swalwell posted on X with a video statement attached. “And I will fight them.”
Despite Swalwell’s denials, more than 20 major Democrats and several large political organizations withdrew their endorsements of Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign.
By Sunday night, Swalwell had suspended his gubernatorial campaign.
As Congress prepared to return from a two-week recess on Tuesday, both Democrats and Republicans were calling on Swalwell to resign. Reports suggested that both Republicans and Democrats were considering an effort to expel problematic members such as Swalwell and Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas.
Prior to Swalwell’s Monday afternoon statement, the House Ethics Committee announced it would investigate the allegations against Swalwell.

Gabbard Exposes Congressional Plot to Impeach Trump
Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Monday declassified and released documents she says show that officials within the Intelligence Community mishandled and politicized a whistleblower complaint that ultimately led to President Donald Trump’s first impeachment in 2019.
According to Gabbard, the newly released records allege that what she described as “deep state actors” collaborated with then–House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to advance what she called a “false narrative” surrounding the whistleblower complaint.
In a statement accompanying the release, Gabbard accused Schiff and Pelosi of withholding transcripts of closed-door congressional testimony from former Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson—records she said would have undercut claims of Trump-Russia collusion dating back to 2017.
Gabbard said those transcripts were kept from the House Judiciary Committee until March 24, 2026, when they were released following a forced vote led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rich Crawford.
The declassified documents, Gabbard said, show that Atkinson departed from standard inspector general investigative procedures and relied on what she characterized as politicized and manufactured narratives when handling the whistleblower complaint tied to Trump’s July 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to the records, Atkinson’s preliminary inquiry involved interviews with only four individuals: the whistleblower, a friend of the whistleblower who assisted in authoring the January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment on Russia and was an associate of former FBI agent Peter Strzok, and two character references who lacked firsthand knowledge of the Trump-Zelensky call.
The documents further state that the whistleblower acknowledged having no direct, firsthand knowledge of the call. One quoted statement attributed to the whistleblower reads, “I do not have direct knowledge of private comments or communications by the President.”
Gabbard said the records show that no formal or complete investigation was conducted before the complaint was transmitted to Congress. Despite lacking firsthand evidence, she alleged that Atkinson moved forward in a way that exceeded his statutory authority and “weaponized” the whistleblower process.
By disregarding guidance from the Department of Justice and relying on secondhand information, Gabbard said Atkinson facilitated the complaint’s transmission to Congress, its referral to the FBI, and its eventual leak to the media.
Gabbard argued that Schiff and Pelosi then used the secondhand allegations to drive media coverage and lay the groundwork for Trump’s impeachment by the House in December 2019.
“The politicization of the whistleblower process by a former CIA employee who was working hand in glove with Democrats in Congress (is an egregious example) of the deep state playbook on how to weaponize the Intelligence Community,” Gabbard said.
“Exposing these tactics and showing how they undermine the fabric of our democratic republic furthers the critical cause of transparency and accountability and will help prevent future abuse of power,” she continued.

Ruling Allows Fulton County to Block Republican Election Board Nominees
The Georgia Court of Appeals has ruled that the Fulton County commissioners may reject Republican nominees to the county’s election board, finding the board appointments are “inherently discretionary.”
For years, the Democrat-controlled Fulton County Board of Commissioners has been fighting the local GOP over who gets to sit on the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections.
In May 2025, the commissioners rejected the Republican Party’s nominees, Julie Adams and Jason Frazier.
Later that summer, Superior Court Judge David Emerson ordered the county to seat both nominees. When the commissioners refused, Emerson issued a follow-on ruling ordering a $10,000-a-day contempt fine—but Democrats refused to budge.
Currently, Adams is the only Republican on the Board of Registration and Elections. She is serving in a holdover status until a replacement is seated.
Appeals Court Reverses Lower Ruling
The appeals court reversed the lower court’s seating order and erased the $10,000-a-day fine, ruling the commissioners’ decisions can be challenged only in cases of “gross abuse of discretion.”
The court said the term “shall appoint” in state law allows commissioners to make their own judgment on nominees.
GOP officials say the decision gives Fulton County Democrats a veto over GOP nominees and undermines bipartisan oversight of local elections.
Republicans Push Back
According to The Federalist, Frazier said, “If this holds, the Dems on the Fulton County Board of Commissioners can essentially pick their Dem Board of Elections members, the chair and the Republicans.”
Nominee Adams issued a written statement: “This action destroys parity—the bipartisan balance that protects election integrity—by granting one party unchecked control over election oversight. It erodes public trust, as citizens inevitably see bias even where none exists. And it sets a dangerous precedent, signaling to other metro counties that political power, not fairness, governs who oversees elections.”
What the Ruling Could Mean
The ruling could encourage other Georgia counties to reject opposing-party nominees the same way. It could also allow commissioners to block nominees who raise concerns about elections before they ever join the board.
Frazier also warned on X about what could happen if Republican representation is blocked in large Democratic counties.
Jason Frazier ?? on X: “Can you imagine what would happen if there were no Republican representation in any of the large blue counties? That is what this allows for. Time is very short. The primary is right around the corner, followed by the midterm.”
The Federalist writes, “This decision creates a dangerous ‘new normal’ for Georgia. If one party can block the other’s nominees until they find someone ‘compliant’ enough, the bipartisan balance the legislature intended to provide confidence and trust in our elections is all but dead.”
The Fulton County GOP is considering an appeal, and Georgia lawmakers are exploring legislation to clarify that “shall appoint” requires commissioners to seat qualified nominees.
