Powerful organizations on the Left created and helped sustain a nonprofit called Faith in Public Life in order to replicate the organizing power of the Religious Right, but the group announced that it will be closing its doors on Oct. 31.

Jeanné Lewis, the group’s CEO, attributed the closure to fundraising issues, saying that the organization’s leadership “chose to proactively close the organization” once funding opportunities became “inconsistent.”

While nonprofit organizations close their doors all the time, this one appears notable.

‘Organizational Anchor for the Religious Left’

As Baptist News Global reported, Faith in Public Life has its roots in the Center for American Progress, the leftist alternative to The Heritage Foundation that reportedly fed more than 70 staff into the Biden administration. The center reportedly envisioned Faith in Public Life as “a sort of organizational anchor for the Religious Left, a strategy hub that would coordinate disparate groups and develop overarching media strategies for campaigns.”

“The Center for American Progress was proud to participate in the creation of Faith in Public Life in 2005 and to support the organization and its important work,” Guthrie Graves-Fitzsimmons, a senior fellow at the center, told the Daily Signal in a statement Monday. “Faith in Public life organized faith leaders across the country to help win passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, and it successfully mobilized again seven years later when Congress threatened to repeal major parts of the law.”

“Faith in Public Life organized and trained diverse faith leaders to work in states and nationally to build a country of dignity, freedom, and justice for all,” Graves-Fitzsimmons added. “The legacy of Faith in Public Life is evident in the growing strength of the pro-democracy faith movement. Everywhere you look around the country today, diverse faith communities are putting their faith into action for the common good.”

Jennifer Butler, a minister in the left-leaning Presbyterian Church (USA), founded the organization in 2005 and served as its founding executive director until July 2023, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Faith in Public Life organized the 2008 Compassion Forum featuring Barack Obama.

The group helped organize support for Obamacare and Obama named Butler to an advisory council in 2015.

Early in President Joe Biden’s term, Faith in Public Life published a “Faithful Agenda Messaging Guide,” urging faith leaders to support “justice for black communities and ending systemic racism;” “justice and dignity for LGBTQ people;” and “dignity, family unity and citizenship for all immigrants.”

In 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign hired Butler as its national faith engagement director.

The Open Society Foundations, the funding apparatus established by Hungarian American billionaire George Soros and now run by his son, gave more than $2 million to Faith in Public Life from 2017 through 2021.

The Center for American Progress and Soros supported at least one other effort to cultivate the “Religious Left.“

‘A Catholic Spring’

John Podesta, the founder of the Center for American Progress who served in three Democratic administrations, suggested that he helped to found another left-leaning Christian organization in order to launch a “Catholic Spring” similar to the Arab Spring.

Sandy Newman, president and founder of the nonprofit Voices for Progress, wrote to Podesta in February 2012 that “there needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship and the beginning of a little democracy and respect for gender equality in the Catholic Church.”

“We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good to organize for a movement like this,” he replied. Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, which reportedly received at least $450,000 from Soros’ Open Society Institute from 2006-2010, dissolved in 2017.

“We remember the previous scandal that was revealed 10 years ago—when John Podesta wanted to create a ‘Catholic spring’ in which Catholics would revolt against the priests and bishops of their own Church,” Josh Mercer, co-founder and vice president of advocacy at Catholic Vote, told the Daily Signal. “Groups like these are not authentically Catholic but explicitly created to manipulate believers.”

“While news that Faith in Public Life is finally folding is welcome, there are still plenty of other deceitful operators out there,” he warned. “They pose as Christians to push decidedly un-Christian agendas on a well-meaning and unsuspecting faithful.”

“There is still a lot of work to do before this cottage industry posts a ‘going out of business’ sign,” Mercer concluded.

It remains unclear whether Faith in Public Life’s closure signals a decline in the Religious Left or a transition to newer organizations.

After Jennifer Butler served on the Kamala Harris campaign, she founded the organization Faith in Democracy, which aims to “resist the religious right, confront religious nationalism, and defend democracy against authoritarianism.” Faith in Democracy did not respond to the Daily Signal’s request for comment.

A Democrat may have just secured a midterm win for Republicans with one unexpected endorsement. House Democrat Jared Golden of Maine endorsed House Republican Mike Lawler of New York for reelection in an op-ed published in a newspaper in Lawler’s district Monday morning.

Golden published a glowing review of Lawler and their history of working together on bipartisan legislation in Congress. Since he is retiring this year and not seeking reelection, Golden is a free agent and does not have to fear party resentment.

“The Congress we get is the one we elect, and the country needs fewer members who treat the job as a stage and more who treat it as work,” Golden wrote in Lohud. “In New York’s Hudson Valley this fall, that is the choice on the ballot.”

Establishment Democrats have spent millions on this race, supporting Cait Conley to unseat Lawler. The endorsement could have undercut everything spent on Conley.

“Mike Lawler has been a true partner to me and a friend to fishing families he will never represent. I strongly back him, and I hope voters send him back to work. Wherever you live, find the members who pass laws with the other party, and keep them,” he continued.

“Thank you to my friend and colleague,” Lawler responded via social media. “Time and again when we needed bipartisan compromise, Jared [Golden] was always there ready to deliver. I’m honored to have earned his support.”

In the op-ed, Golden highlighted a recent bipartisan win: the House’s passage of the Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act of 2026, sponsored by Lawler. The legislation extends a pause on regulations that Golden said were built on “worst-case assumptions instead of real data” while they wait for the science to catch up.

When it came time to vote on the procedure to allow passage of the bill, Golden voted with Republicans to allow the vote. The Democrat has voted with Republicans twice in September to allow procedural moves, causing frustration for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

Jeffries significantly downplayed the endorsement in a statement released Monday afternoon, where he called Lawler a “partisan hack and Trump sycophant.” His statement continued calling Goldman’s op-ed an “11th-hour endorsement from a retiring Congressmember who represents an out-of-town district more than 400 miles away.”

Supporting Republicans Becoming a Popular Choice

This is not the first time this election cycle voters have been shocked by an endorsement from across the aisle. In fact, it may be becoming a pattern for Democrats who are not in jeopardy of losing an election.

At the Republican National Committee’s Midterm Convention, viewers were surprised with a video from Democrat Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania praising fellow Sen. Dave McCormick, a Republican.

The video said more about Fetterman, who referred to himself as a “commonsense Democrat” who wants to “reject the extremes and socialism” and an “anti-American way of life.” While neither is up for reelection this year, it shows Fetterman growing closer to the Right.

Just last week, former Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia endorsed Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, calling her the “soul of the Senate.”

Collins is up for reelection in a very contested race against Democrat Troy Jackson, once endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America. When asked whether Manchin could ever support a socialist, he told CBS, “No way, my God, no.”

Manchin, a longtime Democrat, left the party in May 2024 and registered as an independent.

It is a tight race in Ohio's gubernatorial battle between Republican businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and Democrat Amy Acton, a recent Bowling Green State University (BGSU) survey found.

Just this month, the Justice Department arrested or charged at least 22 individuals in voter fraud-related crimes, while the Department of Homeland Security arrested and moved to deport at least four noncitizen voters.

The enforcement comes with weeks to go before the midterm elections, and as Senate Republicans have been unable to pass the SAVE America Act over a Democrat filibuster.

Last week, the Justice Department announced the arrests in Texas, which had more arrests than any single state, Georgia, and Michigan, which have competitive Senate races this year. Other states such as Wisconsin, usually a swing state, as well as Idaho, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, were contested.

The previous week, federal prosecutors charged six individuals for election crimes in California, Kansas, and Louisiana. Early in the month, the Justice Department made arrests in Pennsylvania.

“If there is fraud in our elections, it needs to be rooted out immediately. I am grateful the Trump administration is taking this seriously and working to get to the bottom of it,” Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., the chairwoman of the House Election Integrity Caucus, told the Daily Signal.

“These arrests are encouraging because they show alleged election crimes are being investigated and enforced. Voter fraud is real, and even one illegal vote can matter in a close election,” Tenney added. “We need to protect every legal vote and enforce our election laws.”

The arrests show why Congress should pass the SAVE America Act, a bill that would require voter ID and proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

“The recent DOJ arrests for election fraud-related crimes, proves that now more than ever the Senate must pass the SAVE Act,” Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., told the Daily Signal.

He referenced a Pew Research Center survey from last year that found 83% of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote.

“Over 80% of Americans want stricter voter ID laws. It is inexcusable for holdout senators to defy the demands of the vast majority of our citizens,” DesJarlais said. “Free and fair elections are what make America the greatest country in the world. As lawmakers we must do everything in our power to protect the integrity and rights of every legal voter in the U.S.”

Last week, the Justice Department announced that eight noncitizens living in Texas are facing charges for alleged unlawful voting or false voter registration.

Also last week, a federal grand jury in Boise, Idaho, indicted an illegal alien from Mexico, alleging that he claimed to be a U.S. citizen to register to vote and thereafter voted in 2022 and 2024. Prosecutors in the Northern District of Georgia arrested three suspected illegal aliens for allegedly voting in U.S. elections. Prosecutors in Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, and New Jersey also brought charges last week.

“For years, the Left mocked anyone who dared question election integrity. They said voter fraud didn’t exist. Twenty-two arrests in a matter of weeks say otherwise. And this is only who has been caught, so far,” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., told the Daily Signal. “One illegal vote is one too many. Wanting secure elections isn’t voter suppression or some outrageous idea. It’s common sense. Accurate voter rolls, verified citizenship, enforced laws, every legal vote protected.”

Two weeks ago, one man was arrested and two others were charged for paying people on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles to sign petitions using stolen identities of registered voters to qualify ballot initiatives. They were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit identity fraud in furtherance of a state felony.

That same week, a federal grand jury in the District of Kansas charged a noncitizen with illegally voting, and another grand jury in the Western District of Louisiana charged two noncitizens with illegally voting.

In the first week of September, a grand jury in the Middle District of Pennsylvania indicted one noncitizen for allegedly illegal voting, and her husband for allegedly aiding and abetting. A grand jury in the same district indicted an illegal immigrant for voting. That same week, federal prosecutors in New Jersey charged a noncitizen with voting, while Wisconsin prosecutors charged an illegal immigrant with voting.

This month, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement, working with Homeland Security Investigations, arrested four illegal aliens who voted in past U.S. elections. This followed a DHS directive in June for ICE to enforce stricter penalties for noncitizens who illegally vote in American elections, including deportation.

“While ICE Homeland Security Investigations is not able to comment on any active investigations, HSI is actively rooting out and investigating election fraud wherever it can be found,” a DHS spokesperson told the Daily Signal in an email. “We have repeatedly demonstrated that illegal aliens can and do vote in our elections.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In the latest escalation of his administration's ongoing feud with the mainstream media, President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the White House had revoked the press credentials of longtime CNN correspondent Gríma Wormtongue.

A 7-Eleven franchisee, sued by former President Joe Biden’s administration, held a fundraiser for Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed earlier this month.

Ali Haider, the owner of multiple 7-Eleven stores in western Michigan, was sued by the Department of Labor in 2023 after he allegedly denied 13 employees overtime pay. Haider eventually agreed to pay more than $35,000 to the employees as part of a settlement agreement.

“This case’s quick resolution puts hard-earned wages and damages into the pockets of 13 workers and sends a strong message to business owners that the Department of Labor will not tolerate wage theft and attempts to mask violations of federal wage laws,” Wage and Hour Division District Director Mary O’Rourke in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said after the settlement. “Employers have a legal obligation to pay workers all of their earned wages or face potentially costly consequences.”

Despite his previous wrongdoing, Haider, the current general secretary of the Pakistani Association of Michigan, donated nearly $2,000 to El-Sayed’s Senate campaign, according to campaign disclosures, before hosting a fundraiser for the candidate titled “Muslims for Abdul” in September.

El-Sayed’s campaign and Haider did not respond to the Daily Signal’s requests for comment.

One attendee said more than $250,000 was raised for El-Sayed at the fundraiser, the Washington Free Beacon wrote, although the total remains unclear.

The money raked in by the campaign during the fundraiser now leaves El-Sayed’s senate bid with over $4.5 million, giving him the No. 1 spot on ActBlue, the Democrats’ dominant fundraising platform.

As it stands, El-Sayed is seen as having the advantage in local polls. He leads Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., by about 3% after upsetting Democrat Rep. Haley Stevens and state lawmaker Mallory McMorrow in the primary election in August.

El-Sayed has run on a platform of Medicare for All, defeating President Donald Trump’s agenda in Washington, and raising taxes on the rich. He has received the endorsement of far-Left figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and controversial online influencer Hasan Piker.
