Minnesota Insurrection Proves ‘Blue State Model’ Has Failed

The Daily Signal - Tue, 02/10/2026 - 16:14

Editor’s note: This is a lightly edited transcript of today’s video from Daily Signal Senior Contributor Victor Davis Hanson. Subscribe to our YouTube channel to see more of his videos.

Hello, this is Victor Davis Hanson for The Daily Signal. I’m trying to make one of my haphazard appearances, depending my energy level, after all these medications they put me on, after this lung cancer surgery. But I’m here on the farm, and I’m doing my best.

I wanna talk a little bit about the open defiance of the federal government. I’ve mentioned that earlier, but when you collate everything that Attorney General of Minnesota Keith Ellison has said, Gov. Tim Walz, Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, it’s unabashed, unapologetic, insurrectionary rhetoric.

It’s not just that they’ve told Immigration and Customs Enforcement to leave. It’s not just that they’ve told their own police forces and law enforcement in Minnesota, in general, not to come to the aid of ICE. It’s that they’re actually working hand in glove with people on the street.

In other words, they encourage them to take pictures, to harass, to block ICE law enforcement activity. And you get the impression that they feel there’s no consequences.

In other words, they’re saying to the rest of us, the 330 million people outside Minnesota, that we, Minnesota elected officials, have the God-given right to pick and choose which federal laws we’re going to obey. And we are just not going to obey the enforcement of federal immigration law. We don’t really care about 10,000 people coming across the border during the Biden administration per day, but we do care about the federal government rectifying that lapse or that crime, by trying to find out where and who and how to get these people out, in Minnesota.

Nor do they care that ICE, according to its own figures, has rounded up 4,000 people with various criminal misdemeanors and felonies, and got them out of Minnesota. And that has contributed to Minnesota’s low crime rate.

But the problem is this, that they understand that the Trump administration, if they were to enforce immigration law to the full letter of the law, that would include collateral people, that when they’re going after criminals, they say, “Or how about you? You’re in the house. Do you have ID?” And if they’re not, then we’re going to deport them. They don’t want any of that. And they don’t want to turn over people, as I said, in the jails.

And that is a model for what I would call the blue states. Is it new? I mean, the Democrats get very upset when you say, you’re the party of insurrection, going back to the civil rights movement and before, the Civil War.

You know, April 12, 1861, when state’s righters in South Carolina said that we’re not going to honor federal law within the confines of South Carolina, along with six other Confederate states, at that time, who had seceded. And we don’t think federal property belongs to you.

So, this is the tradition that Walz, Frey, and Ellison are relying upon. And it’s an unbroken tradition going all the way from John C. Calhoun, as I said, all the way to Orval Faubus, George Wallace, Lester Maddox, segregationists of the 1960s. And the Left has never really confronted it. They said, well, these were just Dixiecrats or Southerners, and we were on the vanguard of civil rights.

No, but when you look at the actual vote of the 1964 and 1965 Civil Rights Act, the Democratic Party voted 60% to 65% in the House and Senate, maybe a little higher, 67%, in one case, to pass those legislations. But the Republicans had a much higher percentage—80% in the Senate and the House on the particular votes were for civil rights.

So, this is something that’s disturbing, that it’s a trademark of over 150 years that the Democratic Party has, maybe it feels that it’s more a people’s party, but they feel they can defy federal law at their own volition.

And again, how do you respond to it? If you don’t respond to it, then you set the precedent that states that are blue can arbitrarily pick and choose which federal laws they want. Although, of course, they want federal monies to come back. And it’s a very dangerous precedent because we’ve seen it in the 1860s, where it led to.

And finally, something else to keep in mind: It’s symptomatic of a larger problem in the blue states. And we’ve kind of flipped the blue/red state paradigm in which we’re seeing 3 million to 4 million people fleeing, for the most part, northern industrial, what we would call in the old days, Yankee blue states, going to the South, which were, traditionally, up until the 1960s, less dynamic societies—more rural, more pyramidal in their economic classes: small group of wealthy, large group of poor, very little middle class—dating back to the Antebellum states.

But what we’re seeing is a complete failure of the blue state model. And the failure is ironic because it’s neo-Confederate. Just like the old Confederacy and the Antebellum South, these blue states are obsessed with race. This is where DEI comes from. This is where, if you’re one-sixteenth of this, or you have DNA of that, you identify, primarily, by your ethnic or racial background and not your common humanity or your common American citizenship. Very similar to the South.

In these blue states and California, from where I’m speaking, there is no middle class. It’s disappearing. It either leaves or realizes that the high tax, highly unregulated, high crime paradigms, and high deficits as well, high debt obligations, in all of these places, like Chicago or Minneapolis or Washington or Baltimore, it’s not a very conducive atmosphere—in Portland, Seattle—for the middle class.

Their downtowns are dying. People are leaving. That’s another trace that we see going back to the neo-Confederate period, that there wasn’t a middle class in the early South. By the way, it’s very ironic that there is a middle class in the South. There is a dynamic economy and there’s less emphasis on race.

Of course, the main neo-Confederate characteristic, all these states feel that they’re unique, they’re chauvinistic, that Minnesotans or Californians or Oregonians are superior morally. And therefore, they have the moral, spiritual, the intellectual right to say, I’m not gonna follow the federal government, if I decide not to.

Now, of course, it’s pick and choose. During the Obama period, they wanted the federal government to suppress state rights, in cases where people question the federal government, who were conservative. But for the larger part, they feel that they’re a law and a culture unto their own.

In conclusion, what’s gonna stop it? People have to identify this blue state model for what it is. It’s a desperate anger, sense of failure, frustration that they cannot create heaven on earth. The high tax, high regulation, green frenzies, woke ideology, DEI, anti-business, billionaire’s tax—all of this is drying up the economy. The crime policies that George Soros DAs, prosecutors—there’s high-crime areas and people don’t want to be there. And they understand that. And their reaction to it is to get angrier, more chauvinistic, and more defiant, especially of the federal government.

If they would relax and say, my gosh, President Donald Trump is gonna send people in to lower our crime rate, to get criminals off the street, to work with us—you think they would enjoy that? No. It’s nihilism. And it’s spreading.

And unfortunately, as I said earlier, in an earlier podcast, there’s nothing in the Constitution about a state leaving the Constitution, the Constitution of the states. But there is something about how federal law, the supremacy clause, supersedes state law.

So, what I’m getting at is all of these states, and Minnesota, now, in particular, are openly defying the federal government, in the tradition that led up to the Civil War and after the Civil War, led to Jim Crow and the crisis and the confrontations of the 1960s.

Final irony: This is all from left-wing, liberal, progressive, enlightened people. And they have chosen a most unenlightened, backward position because the common denominator is they feel that this is a source of power and continuity of their control of government.

We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal.

10 Threats Against Trump Admin Officials in 2026

The Daily Signal - Tue, 02/10/2026 - 15:31

This year may have barely begun, but it has already witnessed many threats to President Donald Trump and members of his administration.

President Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July 2024, and he faced another serious assassination attempt in West Palm Beach, Florida, two months later. The first assassin died in the attempt, and a judge sentenced Ryan Routh, 59, to life in prison plus 84 months last week for the second attempt.

Two events last year highlighted the rise of political violence on the Left: the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, and the comments of Democrat Jay Jones, who now serves as Virginia’s attorney general, wishing for the death of his political opponents. (Jones apologized for the comments after National Review exposed them.)

A judge sentenced Jauan Rashun Porter, 30, to more than three years in prison Tuesday for transmitting threats to kill Trump last summer. Porter allegedly said on TikTok that “there’s only one way to make America great and that is putting a bullet in between Trump’s eyes.”

Earlier this year, defendants have allegedly threatened Trump, key administration officials, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Here’s the list of arrests so far this year, for threats made both this year and late last year.

1. Threat to JD Vance

Secret Service agents arrested Shannon Mathre, 33, on Friday. A grand jury indicted Mathre on charges of threatening to take the life of a successor to the presidency, namely Vice President JD Vance.

“I am going to find out where he [Vance] is going to be and use my M14 automatic gun and kill him,” Mathre allegedly stated.

“Our attorneys are vigorously prosecuting this disgusting threat against Vice President Vance,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said. “You can hide behind a screen, but you cannot hide from this Department of Justice.”

2. Vandalizing Vance’s Home

A federal grand jury charged William DeFoor, 26, with damaging government property; engaging in physical violence against a person in a restricted building; and assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers for his invasion of Vance’s home in Cincinnati on Jan. 5.

DeFoor allegedly used a hammer to break glass, ignored repeated warnings to stop, and attempted to flee on foot.

3. Another Vance Threat

Authorities arrested Marco Antonio Aguayo, 22, of Anaheim, California, last month for posting death threats on Instagram against Vice President Vance during Vance’s visit to Disneyland last year.

4. Threat to Russ Vought

Arlington County police arrested Colin Demarco, 26, on Jan. 22, for attempting to murder Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought.

Demarco went to Vought’s northern Virginia home on August 10. He faces charges of attempted murder and carrying a firearm without a permit, along with the unlawful wearing of a mask, NBC News reported.

5. Antifa Member Threatening ICE Agents

Authorities arrested Kyle Wagner, 37, on federal threat and cyberstalking charges last week. He allegedly threatened to assault and murder ICE agents. A resident of Minneapolis, Wagner reportedly identified himself with Antifa.

“This man allegedly doxxed and called for the murder of law enforcement officers, encouraged bloodshed in the streets, and proudly claimed affiliation with the terrorist organization Antifa before going on the run,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said.

6. Threats to Federal Agents

Authorities charged Taylor Ryan Prigmore, 30, with threatening to kill federal agents in an indictment handed down last month.

“I am preparing physically and mentally to kill federal agents,” Prigmore allegedly stated in a YouTube video. “Our presidents [sic] needs to die to save lives.”

7. Threats to FBI Director Kash Patel

A grand jury indicted Oklahoma man Jacob Wray Hudson last month on threats against a federal law enforcement officer and interstate communications with threats to injure others.

Muskogee, Oklahoma, police say Hudson yelled about wanting to kill President Trump and “the Jews.” According to court document, Hudson admitted to threatening FBI Director Kash Patel and Patel’s girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins, on Instagram. “You’re both gonna be publicly executed for hurting kids,” he posted.

8. Threatening Trump and ICE Agents

A federal grand jury indicted Francisco Jesus Mena, 36, earlier this month on charges of threatening a federal official. Mena, a resident of North Richland Hills, Texas, allegedly threatened to assault and murder President Trump and unnamed ICE agents. If convicted, he faces up to 96 years in prison.

9. Threatening Trump on Shotgun Shells

Police in Portland, Oregon, shot and killed a man who had written President Trump’s name on shotgun shells, and who had falsely identified himself as a Secret Service officer before pulling out a gun at a Safeway location. Police said the man pulled the trigger at Safeway, but the gun did not fire.

“Because of the U.S. Secret Service angel, the fact that he was impersonating an agent, the fact that there was a potential threat to the president … that prompted them to bring in the Secret Service as part of the investigation,” a Portland Police Bureau spokesperson said.

10. Threatening to Kill ICE Agents

West Virginia State Police arrested Cody Smith, 20, last month after he allegedly “posted videos of himself” saying he was “going to attack and kill ICE agents” in calls to the Department of Homeland Security.

Deputies said Smith “made threats to the president of the United States” and posted that he “intended to ‘murder’ Trump supporters” and “service members willing to ‘bootlick,'” according to a criminal complaint.

‘That’s The Leverage’: Democrats Shrug Off FEMA and TSA Funding Concerns As Partial Shutdown Looms

The Daily Signal - Tue, 02/10/2026 - 15:30

As the House Homeland Security Committee heard testimonies from top DHS officials on Tuesday, Republicans are warning Democrats about the consequences of a partial government shutdown.

Congress is facing yet another potential partial government shutdown this Friday as funding for the Department of Homeland Security is set to expire. Democrats have made their demands clear, stating that they will not fund DHS without Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, reform.

ICE, however, received billions of dollars in funding from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. But shutting down DHS funding will harm other agencies will harm other agencies funded through DHS.

If Democrats vote against funding for the department, FEMA and TSA operations could be at risk, Republicans argue.

“Another shutdown of DHS will disrupt important operations that include seizing illegal drugs, responding to natural disasters, combating child exploitation, arresting human traffickers, and preventing cyberattacks,” Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., told the Daily Signal.

“Any sort of tragedy that happens in this country depends on the support from FEMA,” Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, told The Daily Signal outside the hearing room. “They’re here for an emergency.”

When The Daily Signal asked about the impact a shutdown would have on FEMA and TSA specifically, Democrats did not seem concerned.

Rep. Shri Thandar, D-Mich., who serves on the committee alongside Guest and Pfluger, said he is actually willing to leverage FEMA funding for Republicans to meet their demands. “That’s the leverage that we have,” he told the Daily Signal.

“I would like Democratic leaders to stay firm and get some concessions that are meaningful…We should use every leverage that we have,” Thandar concluded.

Rep. Vince Fong, R-Calif., responded to this statement from Thandar by stating, “Public safety should never be used as a bargaining chip.”

“The decision by Democrats to shut down and stop funding homeland security agencies is reckless and is putting American lives at risk,” Fong told the Daily Signal.

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., responded by focusing on ICE funding. “The President was able to operate despite the last shutdown,” he told The Daily Signal outside the hearing room.

“Our requirements are pretty clear. Stop the roaming patrols. Take off the masks. Go to judges if you’re going to seek warrants, and we will support your operations if they’re not going after nonviolent individuals,” Swalwell said outside the hearing, referencing the list of demands Democrats put out last week.

Rep. Gabe Evans, R-Colo., told The Daily Signal that “[Democrats] will continue to play reckless political games at the expense and suffering of the American people—defunding TSA, FEMA, and denying Coloradans in my district clean drinking water and other vital services to push their anti-law enforcement agenda.”

“Make no mistake—their theatrics aren’t about saving lives or protecting families; they’re about political leverage, even if it weakens our public safety and disaster response,” concluded Evans.

Rep. James Walkinshaw, D-Va., seemed more willing to negotiate. “We want to reach an agreement to avoid that and prevent [defunding FEMA and TSA],” he told The Daily Signal outside the hearing. “That’s why we need the Republicans to offer a substantive response to what Democrats have put on the table.”
