America’s Scouting Tradition Should Be About Moral Principles, Not Shifting Ideology

The Daily Signal - Thu, 02/05/2026 - 13:00

Once again, Scouting America is in the headlines–and unsurprisingly, it appears the organization is weighing whether its convictions are negotiable.

This time, the Department of War is reportedly reviewing its longstanding relationship with the Boy Scouts of America, now rebranded as “Scouting America.” The War Department has raised concerns that the organization’s recent embrace of DEI initiatives and gender ideology runs counter to the values of the current administration and the department itself.

And suddenly, Scouting America is signaling it may “reconcile” its practices in order to preserve that partnership.

But Americans should not be fooled. We’ve seen this story before.

I founded American Heritage Girls nearly 30 years ago because I could already see the cultural pressures mounting against traditional scouting. It wasn’t because America needed less scouting–it was because girls needed a scout-type program rooted firmly in God, truth, and timeless moral principles. Even then, it was clear that the very foundations that made scouting strong were being treated as optional.

Today, what has happened to once-iconic organizations like the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts of the USA is nothing short of devastating. In the name of being “inclusive,” “modern,” and on the so-called “right side of history,” they have rewritten membership standards, diluted duty to God, and replaced timeless values with shifting cultural trends.

But shifting sands are no foundation at all.

Scouting was never meant to reflect whatever ideology happens to dominate the headlines. It was designed to build character, cultivate leadership, and strengthen families and communities. Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting, called it “applied Christianity.” It was a movement built on duty, discipline, service, courage, and moral clarity.

Yet today, moral clarity has been replaced by moral relativism.

We now live in a world where “morally straight” has been redefined, “boy” and “girl” are treated as interchangeable concepts, and truth is determined by feelings rather than reality. The Boy Scouts are no longer for boys, and the Girl Scouts openly permit boys who identify as girls to participate. Whatever one’s political views, this is undeniably confusing for parents–and especially for impressionable children.

And it raises a serious question: if scouting can’t even define what a boy or girl is, how can it form them into men and women of integrity?

This is why claims of returning to “core values” ring hollow. When Scouting America now suggests it may be shifting again–this time away from DEI and gender ideology–it doesn’t represent conviction. It represents calculation.

When principles are treated like a dial that can be turned depending on who holds the purse strings, the message to families is unmistakable: the organization’s values are for sale.

And if money or political pressure can force a “return” to traditional values today, what will push them back in the other direction tomorrow?

History tells us exactly what will happen. Scouting America will fold like a lawn chair.

They have done it before. They will do it again.

That’s the danger of building a youth program on cultural approval rather than on truth. An organization untethered from fixed moral principles will always drift — because drift is the natural consequence of abandoning the anchor.

The need in America is not new, but it is urgent. Parents are desperate for something steady, trustworthy, and true. Children deserve more than shifting standards and rebranded promises. They deserve institutions that are willing to stand firm, even when it costs them.

Scouting can still be a powerful force for good. The traditions of service, outdoor adventure, leadership development and community engagement remain deeply valuable. But the strength of scouting has never been in its uniforms or badges — it has been in its unwavering commitment to truth.

If Scouting America truly wants to return to its core values, it must do more than issue statements or adjust language when government contracts are on the line. It must demonstrate a willingness to stand on principle regardless of cultural pressure or financial consequence.

Because once a movement trades conviction for convenience, the erosion doesn’t stop on its own.

And if scouting is going to shape the next generation, it must return not to what is popular but to what is Godly and true — something American Heritage Girls has been putting into practice for 30 years.

We publish a variety of perspectives. Nothing written here is to be construed as representing the views of The Daily Signal.

Fraud, Waste Grip D.C.’s Costly Anti-Crime Program that Uses Ex-Cons as Violence Interrupters

Judicial Watch - Thu, 02/05/2026 - 12:41

In the latest scandal to rock the District of Columbia’s doomed program to reduce crime with ex-con “violence interrupters,” a nonprofit that claims to serve at-risk populations spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars earmarked for the initiative on trips, lavish meals, an alcohol-filled pool party and to pay family members. The money was part of $3.6 million awarded by D.C.’s famously corrupt government to a leftist nonprofit called Life Deeds that was supposed to use the funds to help reduce shootings by deploying violence interrupters—many of them convicted of serious felonies—to crime-infested neighborhoods. Instead, a substantial chunk of the public funds was improperly wasted, according to an investigative article published this week by the area’s mainstream newspaper. That includes the D.C. government reimbursing the disgraced executive director of Life Deeds, Allieu Kamara, twice every month for rent on the same building, awarding him $60,000 in duplicate payments in a year. The city’s administrator confirms in the story that the spending was a “completely inappropriate use of public money that should not have happened.”

Though D.C.’s costly violence interruption experiment was launched years ago and has done little to crack down on skyrocketing gun crime in the area’s most violent neighborhoods, officials gave Life Deeds millions in 2023 because homicides surged to levels not seen in a generation, according to the news story. For some Life Deeds employees “the city’s investment in violence interruption became an extra business opportunity,” the in-depth article states, adding that the executive director and employees used at least $400,000 in city funds in ways that undermined the anti-violence mission and should never have been allowed. Besides the previously mentioned expenditures there were trips to a New Jersey shopping mall and payouts for businesses owned by Life Deeds staff to provide decorations, refreshments, and entertainment for parties. Incredibly, Life Deeds had already been blacklisted by D.C. after falsifying criminal background checks for employees while carrying out $20 million in city contracts to help homeless people and troubled youth. The D.C. Department of Human Services terminated the deals after discovering the serious violations by the charity.

But the shady track record did not stop D.C. officials from entrusting the group to help reduce violence, awarding it millions of taxpayer dollars to disburse “reformed” criminals to complete a mission that has failed miserably. The agency that oversees D.C.’s violence interruption program, Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE), refused to comment about this latest scandal when contacted by the newspaper that just published this exposé. Last spring Judicial Watch reported that a disgraced D.C. councilman (Trayon White) who served in ONSE was arrested and charged in a bribery scheme for taking tens of thousands of dollars in cash bribes to help extend violence prevention and youth services contracts. Around the same time an ex-con, Cotey Wynn, got charged with his second felony since D.C. officials hired him to be a violence interrupter. Wynn has an extensive rap sheet and had served a decade in prison for first degree murder, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, and distribution of a controlled substance when D.C. officials hired him to help curb crime.

D.C.’s ill-fated violence prevention venture began as a special safety program known as Cure the Streets launched by former D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine to reduce gun violence by treating it as a disease that can be interrupted and stopped from spreading. Cure the Streets typically hires men and women with criminal histories as violence interrupters because they know first-hand about the challenges that residents of crime-infested communities live with. The reality is that many of the ex-cons paid by the city to rein in crime end up getting arrested again, creating serious doubts about the effectiveness of the anti-violence initiative in the neighborhoods it is supposed to help. The president of the D.C. Police Union, which represents some 3,000 officers, recently said “violence Interruption in DC is nothing more than a grift for the government to funnel tax dollars directly to illegal gangs and violent criminals.” The police union president, Gregg Pemberton added that there is no evidence the program has any level of efficacy and every month a violence interrupter gets arrested for a “heinous act.”

Fox News Posts Highest-Ever Second Quarter Ad Revenue, Adds 200 New Advertisers

The Daily Signal - Thu, 02/05/2026 - 12:35

Fox News delivered its highest second quarter advertising revenue in the network’s history, Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced Wednesday during the company’s earnings call.

The record haul was fueled in part by an influx of new advertisers. Murdoch said Fox News added roughly 200 new advertisers in the first half of the fiscal year—on top of the 350 new advertisers the network brought in last year.

“The advertising market for Fox News has been incredibly robust,” Murdoch told investors. “The demand for the product and the demand for the audience remains incredibly strong.

Fox Corporation reported total quarterly revenues of $5.18 billion, a 2% year-over-year increase. The company’s cable networks, which includes Fox News, Fox Business, and FS1, brought in $2.28 billion, up 5% year over year.

Surging Ad Sales

Scatter pricing for Fox News—a measure of ad rates sold closer to air time—jumped a staggering 46% to 47% year over year, a figure Murdoch called “embarrassing.”

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the performance of advertising sales at Fox News,” Murdoch said.

Heading into the 2026 midterm elections, Murdoch said Fox News expects to be the “primary beneficiary” of a robust political advertising cycle.

As the top-rated news network on cable TV, Fox News is not only a go-to source for Republicans and conservatives. Murdoch said the network also draws more Democrats and independents than its cable news competitors, making it an attractive option for political campaigns looking to reach a broad electorate.

“We’re in a very good position going forward into this political cycle,” Murdoch said on Wednesday’s earnings call.

Streaming Growth

Murdoch also offered a window into the early performance of Fox One, the company’s streaming platform that launched last year at $19.99 per month. Murdoch said the service “continues to exceed our expectations,” driven by both direct signups and partnerships.

Five months after launch, news already accounts for approximately one-third of total minutes viewed on the Fox One platform.

“News viewers engage with the platform twice as many days per week as non-news viewers, and watch it nearly three times as many minutes per week on average,” Murdoch said. “These patterns reinforce our view that Fox One is not only the premier destination for live sports but also the leading platform for timely, relevant live news streaming.”

Ratings Dominance

The record financial results come on the heels of Fox News’ continued ratings dominance in the ever-changing media landscape.

As The Daily Signal reported last week, Fox News marked its 24th consecutive year as the top-rated cable news network in January, commanding nearly 60% of total cable news viewership across both total day and prime time.

The network averaged 2.4 million viewers in weekday prime time—enough to beat CBS, a broadcast network available to a far larger audience. “The Five” led cable news with 3.7 million viewers, followed by “Jesse Watters Primetime,” the 8 p.m. show hosted by Jesse Watters, also a co-host of “The Five”.

Greg Gutfeld’s late-night show rounded out the top three, averaging an audience of 2.1 million. “Gutfeld”  outperformed both late-night rivals Stephen Colbert on CBS and Jimmy Fallon on ABC.
