U.S. President Donald Trump said that he will speak to Russia's Vladimir Putin in a phone call on Monday aimed at bringing peace to Ukraine.

In an effort to stop the “bloodbath” in the war between Russia and Ukraine, President Donald Trump will have separate phone calls with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday.  

Trump will first speak with the Russian leader and the “subjects of the call will be, stopping the ‘bloodbath’ that is killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, and trade,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday morning.  

“I will then be speaking to President Zelenskyy of Ukraine and then, with President Zelenskyy, various members of NATO,” Trump wrote. “Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end. God bless us all!!!”  

Russia invaded Ukraine over three years ago, a move Trump says would not have happened had he been president at the time. Trump has made ending the war between the two countries a key priority of his administration.  

Since returning to the White House in January, Trump and Putin have spoken by phone but have not met in person. Trump has met twice with Zelenskyy, first in a contentious meeting at the White House in February. The two leaders met alone at the Vatican on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral in April. 

The announcement of the Monday phone calls comes one day after delegations from Russia and Ukraine met in Istanbul for the first direct talks between the two nations since March 2022.   

Putin proposed the direct peace talks but chose not to attend the meeting in Istanbul. Trump encouraged Zelenskyy to meet with Putin after the Russian leader suggested the talks and Zelenskyy flew to Turkey, but ultimately did not attend the meeting.   

Secretary of State Marco Rubio was present for the talks on Friday, but acknowledged beforehand that he did not expect a breakthrough without key leaders in the room.   

Following the less than two-hour meeting in Istanbul, Ukrainian official familiar with the talks told Reuters that Russia is demanding Ukraine pull all its troops out of the regions Russia has claimed before a ceasefire is agreed upon.  

While no clear results toward peace were reached during Friday’s meeting, the two nations did agree to a large prisoner swap of 1,000 prisoners of war on each side.  

Vladimir Medinsky, a top Kremlin aide who led the Russian delegation, said each delegation did agree for both sides to present a ceasefire plan in detail and that talks will continue.    

“Ukraine is ready to take all realistic steps to end this war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X Friday.  

“President Trump wants to end this war,” Zelenskyy continued in a series of posts on X. “We need to keep working closely with him and stay as coordinated as possible. Long-term U.S. support is also essential. An American backstop is needed. It’s important that we all work together, on every level, to make that happen.”

A new conservative political party is rising in Britain, and it echoes President Donald Trump’s success in the United States, according to a veteran political observer who has lived in both countries.

“I know the [United Kingdom] and Europe seem lost and adrift, but there are great movements happening at the local level in the grassroots to change the direction,” Sarah Elliott, director of the Special Relationship Unit at the Prosperity Institute, told The Daily Signal. “Don’t give up on your allies overseas.”

The Prosperity Institute advances prosperity in the United Kingdom by championing national sovereignty, free markets, the rule of law, family values, and cheap and abundant energy.

Elliott, whose official title is Lady Elliott of Mickle Fell because her husband serves in the House of Lords, has worked in politics on both sides of the Atlantic. Speaking with The Daily Signal, she addressed Trump’s budding trade deal with Britain, the economic damage of “net zero” climate alarmist policies, and her hope for the future of British politics.

She highlighted Reform UK, the political party led by Nigel Farage, which made big gains in the English elections earlier this month. Reform won 677 of around 1,600 contested seats, taking eight local councils from the Conservative Party.

Elliott praised Reform as “the youngest political party in the UK” with “more members now than the oldest political party in the UK, the Conservatives.”

Reform is “becoming the populist party, the ‘Britain First,’ ‘Make Britain Great Again’ party,” and it attracts voters from both the Labour and Conservative parties, she said.

While Reform focuses on immigration, it also opposes the diversity, equity, and inclusion movement and climate policies. “They’re coming out very strongly now against net zero,” Elliot noted.

She faulted the Conservative Party for failing to stand on conservative values, particularly on climate issues.

“They’re just very left of center,” Elliott said of the Conservatives. “They weren’t conservative and so they were not an alternative to Labour,” the leftist party.

“We see energy prices over there that are five times higher than the United States,” she said, referring to Britain. (The International Energy Agency released data last year showing Britain having the highest energy prices in the world, roughly five times the U.S. price.)

Elliott attributed the higher prices to climate alarmist crackdowns. “We’ve shut all of our coal power plants,” she said. “We stopped drilling for our natural fossil fuels in the North Sea. We don’t frack anymore. The environmental lobby has been incredibly persuasive to the public, but it’s become a groupthink in the UK and monolithic thinking that all political parties until recently embraced, including the Conservative Party.”

She attributed the Conservative Party’s loss in the general election last July partly to climate policies. Conservative voters split between Reform and the Conservatives, leading to a Labour victory.

The Conservative government made commitments to cut carbon emissions to zero by 2050, which “has turned upside down our energy sources and made energy incredibly expensive.”

“It’s starting to really impact not just individual families, but businesses, and British companies are now relocating to where there is cheaper energy,” Elliott added. “It’s not just at the stage of not investing in the UK, they’re now actually moving their facilities and their factories to the U.S., and to avoid tariffs.”

Elliott celebrated the progress toward a trade deal between Britain and the United States in the wake of Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.

She noted that Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the partial deal on May 8, the anniversary of the Allies’ victory over Nazi Germany in Europe, and that Britain was the first country to get a partial deal after the tariffs.

“The main target of these ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs and the main relationship that needs to be rebalanced is that with China, and the UK and the U.S. stood shoulder to shoulder,” Elliott said.

“China is not emulating net zero,” she noted. “They don’t care about the environment.”

“Why should our economies suffer while others are just running wild?” she asked.

While Britain’s Reform Party seems to be taking cues from Trump, Elliott said Britain is leading the U.S. on one issue—opposing gender ideology.

“On the whole transgender debate, the UK has actually been ahead of the curve on this, pushing back against ‘gender-affirming care,’ and it’s come from the Left,” she noted. “Left-wing feminists and lesbians” sounded the alarm about men in women’s spaces, and the UK has curtailed transgender medical experiments on children following British physician Dr. Hilary Cass’s exhaustive report last year.

More than anything else, Elliott highlighted the need for Britain and the U.S. to work together to foster economic growth and to counter China.

“The UK and Europe sometimes need to be guided,” she noted. “They need to be reminded that they want to rely more on the U.S. than on China.”

The rise and fall of left-wing media darling David Hogg demonstrates exactly what the Left is all about and why the Democratic Party is losing young men.

Hogg, a 25-year-old gun control activist turned pillow salesman (that’s probably inaccurate since he never actually sold any pillows) turned party organizer clearly aimed to be a mover and shaker in the Democratic Party’s present and future. In February, he was elected to be one of the chairs of the Democratic National Committee.

Hogg was clearly set to be their white, male Gen Z whisperer.

They already tried to use former vice-presidential nominee Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as a sock puppet who could, in his words, “code talk to White guys watching football, fixing their truck.”

That didn’t work out, so Democrats switched to a younger, even more non-threatening model who could appeal to the Y chromosome types without triggering the birthing people in their ranks.

The experiment didn’t last long.

Hogg’s career inevitably hit the rock of DEI that operates as both the quasi-religion of the modern Left as well as its elite gatekeeping tool.

After being elected as vice chair, Hogg took his role a little too seriously and tried to shake up the party. This makes sense after their catastrophic defeat in last year’s election and historic unpopularity.

Hogg announced his desire to fund primary challengers to some of the long-term House Democrats in safe districts who weren’t sufficiently anti-Trump. This ruffled the feathers of the powers that be.

How did Democratic Party powerbrokers solve this embarrassment and save face? They found a technicality to unseat him based on their old reliable trick: identity politics.

Oklahoma DNC member Kalyn Free lodged a complaint alleging the way Hogg and another male DNC chair won their elections unfairly disadvantaged and “discriminated against three women of color candidates.”

By the way, here is Free, who is described by corporate media as a Native American activist.

The DNC has gender diversity rules for their chair positions, of course. They’ve apparently concocted just the right alchemy that ensures their leaders perfectly reflect what America looks like. After considerable debate at the convention last year they decided that the chair positions must be evenly split between men and women with a seat open for a “non-binary” person.

Free argued, according to Deseret News, that “by running the vote for the two [chair] positions at the same time, with the requirement that at least one male candidate be chosen, it gave both male candidates a boost.”

Hogg eventually got the ax as did the other male DNC chair who seemed to get caught in the fray.

Could Democrats really have come up with a better scenario to demonstrate why young men—especially white men—are fleeing the party in droves?

Democrat kingmakers rather gleefully gave Hogg the DNC chair position so they could use him as window dressing and say that they really understand the young male voter.

They came to regret their Hogg selection when he actually started doing things, showing—dare I say it? male gumption—and challenged the party’s power structures.

When Hogg upset the apple cart just a bit, he was quickly reminded that the party is now dominated by HR girlbosses and as a white male, he’s at the top of the hierarchy of oppression.

At any moment, his race and gender can be used against him.

Walz survived during the presidential campaign by playing the amiable “knucklehead.” Hogg tried too hard to make a bigger name for himself and got nuked by DEI.

Maybe he learned a lesson from this, but who knows? After all, Tulsi Gabbard went from rising Democrat star to party pariah when she questioned the DNC and is now President Donald Trump’s Director of National Intelligence.

One thing is for certain, though, the Democratic Party continues to operate by 2020 Great Awokening rules, where everything is about racial and gender grievance, and identity quotas are ruthlessly enforced.

It’s like trying to survive as a Communist Party apparatchik in the old Soviet Union where your career could be derailed by an accusation that your grandfather was an industrialist and an enemy of the workers. A talented leader could be easily destroyed by a lazy lunkhead with the right background. Only the most vicious, ruthless liars who could navigate the system’s complicated power structure made it to the top.

Democrats have created something like that, but with race and gender identity replacing the old class dynamics.

Given that the Democratic Party has become the party of insiders, our elite institutions began adopting these rules too. Trump’s election in November was, among many things, a massive rebuke to a society that operates that way.

But Democrats haven’t really changed at all. This is what they are. Merit and talent mean very little, identity is everything, and anyone who tries to break out of this box is liable to be ruthlessly purged. Hogg’s sacrifice at the altar of DEI demonstrates exactly what the Left is all about, lest it be forgotten.
